Color, Color

[social_share/]

These days, glass and plastic bottles come in lots of different colors. Here at OHA, our glass and plastic bottles are brown. Most people think we just picked the color because of aesthetics. But the truth is, there is a reason why we choose to store our products in dark colored bottles.

OHA skincare products are made using plant based organic ingredients. Since we don’t use synthetic preservatives, our products are sensitive to light and heat. Our brown colored bottles shield light away and help protect the ingredients in our products. Therefore, the whole ingredients in your OHA product remains balanced and full of the healing, restorative and regenerative elements. Be sure to always keep your OHA purchase out of direct sunlight and away from heat.

Summer Skin : Soothe What Ails You

[social_share/]

Who doesn’t love Summer? Everyone seems more chipper this time of year. Maybe it’s because they’re enjoying life outdoors, spending quality time with friends and family, and not having to layer their clothes to feel comfortable. All of this is lovely. The downside to summer, for many, is the harsh effect it has on their skin. Being outdoors in hot weather leads to sun damage and often sun burn. People with oily skin, like myself, often experience breakouts during the summer. For those of you in drier climates, your skin may get drier with the weather. Heat can wreak havoc on the balance we’ve reached with our skin and I’m here to share some helpful ways to overcome some summer skin obstacles.

Preventing Sun Damage and Burns:

A study from 2009 explains how antioxidants, like OHA’s green tea and vitamins E & C may have “minimal SPF” despite having been shown to “protect against UV-induced DNA damage and immune suppression, in part through its ability to reduce oxidative stress”. The conclusion is that “the addition of botanical antioxidants and vitamins C and E to a broad-spectrum sunscreen may further decrease UV-induced damage compared with sunscreen alone.” The best way to prevent sun damage and skin cancer is to use non-toxic sunscreen in conjunction with antioxidant skin care, like OHA. The most concentrated source of antioxidants in OHA is the Intensive Nutrient Complex, so if you want the most sun-protective bang for your buck, this is your best bet. Even better? Combine CoQ10 & Argan Face Cream, Lip Line Treatment, and Hydrating Mist in the palm of your hand and apply it all over your face and neck for a thoroughly antioxidant-rich facial routine.

Already Burnt?

Is it too late for prevention? If so, your skin will be red, sensitive, and hot. Make sure to stay out of the sun after a burn and drink plenty of water throughout the day. It’s important to be gentle with your skin, especially when it’s burnt, so avoid scrubbing vigorously and avoid any harsh, acidic skin treatments. Instead, use Intensive Nutrient Complex and Daily Moisturizer with Hydrating Mist to thoroughly calm the skin and bring it back to balance. Your burn will feel overheated, so liberally sprits your face and shoulders with Hydrating Mist to cool down and give your skin nourishment all day. Even oily skin that is feeling a bit fried can benefit from this treatment. Just be sure to dilute the serum and moisturizer with at least 7 sprays of Hydrating Mist in the palm of your hand before applying to your skin.

Speaking of Oily Skin…

As soon as the weather switched to summer in Seattle, my forehead developed some unsightly breakouts. Because my skin felt oily all day, I found myself touching my face a lot to wipe away excess oil. It’s no wonder I was having zit problems! As soon as I started using a little bit less moisturizer and serum (from 1 pump to less than half a pump for each) and using about twice as much Hydrating Mist, my breakouts cleared within a week. Beyond healing my breakouts, this new routine moisturized my skin just enough that it didn’t feel oily after my skin care routine but also didn’t leave my skin without oils after cleansing. When you have oily skin, it’s tempting to power wash your face and avoid moisturizer, but this habit will lead to your skin needing to replace oils that were removed from cleansing and often overcompensate by getting extra oily. Just a little bit of moisture will give your skin some much-needed balance.

On the Drier Side?

Martha’s favorite combination when she needs both sun protection and a lot of hydration is CoQ10 & Argan Face Cream combined with Daily Moisturizer and Intensive Nutrient Complex. This trio offers a protective barrier between the elements and the skin’s lipid barrier while also quenching thirsty skin. Essentially, it provides the skin with moisture and locks in that moisture all day. It’s chock-full of antioxidants, too, so it’s a great supplement to your sun care routine.

Your skin is communicating with you on a daily basis. It’s reflecting your emotions, your diet and how you’re nourishing it directly. When you notice changes in your skin, see what shifted in your life to figure out the cause of your skin’s changes. If the summer heat has been giving your skin trouble, I hope these bits of advice help you get back to good. Treat your skin kindly and enjoy all this season has to offer.

Why CoQ10 Makes Your Skin Beautiful

[social_share/]

We’ve done a lot of hooting and hollering about the launch of our CoQ10 and Argan Face Cream but forgot to mention why it’s such a fabulous addition to our skin care line up. Let’s talk ingredients:

CoQ10 Powder: You’ve probably seen this in grocery stores as a supplement to support heart health and energy. CoQ10 is made in the body but is hard to come by naturally in food, hence its popularity in supplement form. Topically, it’s a powerful antioxidant that smoothes wrinkles and reverses sun damage (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20635514). CoQ10 blocks collagen-damaging enzymes called metalloproteinases (MMPs) so the skin stays elastic, supple and strong. MMPs are stimulated by pollution, smoking, oxidative damage from UV radiation and other environmental hazards, so having CoQ10 to protect and fortify collagen against MMPs is especially important for an anti-aging skin treatment.

Argan Oil: This is an oil from Morocco that’s loaded with natural tocopherols (vitamin E), phenols, carotenes, squalenes and fatty acids. It absorbs quickly but is a rich enough oil to deeply hydrate dry skin. As an added bonus, it also prevents and reduces signs of stretch marks and other scarring.

Moroccan Argan Tree

Plum Kernel Oil: Like Argan Oil, Plum Kernel Oil is rich in essential fatty acids, which boost cell regeneration, provide lipid barrier protection and nourish the innermost workings of the skin, the dermis. What makes Plum Kernel especially great in a face cream is its absorbability – it leaves virtually no oily residue so your skin gets hydrated but doesn’t feel like an oil slick.

Beyond containing these beauties, our new face cream is VEGAN. That’s right. This cream is beeswax free and ready to quench those thirsty vegan faces.

CoQ10 & Argan Face Cream seemed like an obvious choice for the Radiant Skin Treatment with its anti-aging and deep hydration abilities. Our customers have mentioned a progressive brightening of their skin with continued use of this new cream due to the high concentration of Vitamin C. Check out the Radian Skin Treatment through October 30thfor special pricing on all the steps of this skin beautifying regimen.

The Difference Between “Clean Skin Care” and OHA

[social_share/]

When I first looked at the ingredient deck of OHA, there were some words that seemed kind of iffy. What is MSM? Is Tocotrienol some sort of medical emergency? Are these safe?

As you well know, OHA is teeming with beautiful essential oils, extracts and minerals, but what sets it apart is the concentration of those potent ingredients and the added bonus of skin-enriching nutrients. Now is as good a time as any to review why these nutrient-rich ingredients rock:

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane): “MSM is an organic sulfur-containing compound that occurs naturally in a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains and animals including humans. It …aids in sulfur metabolism, particularly in connective tissue.”  Martha formulated this into most of her products because it supports collagen connectivity while also encouraging skin detoxification. It also helps skin repair itself.

Ester-C & Ascorbyl Palmitate: Both are Vitamin C supplements, which support collagen and protect Vitamin E and our skin cells from oxidative damage (aka “aging”).

Tocopherol & Tocotrienol: These are Vitamin E supplements which are potent antioxidants.

Hydrolyzed Oat Protein: Smoothes fine lines and wrinkles while drawing moisture to the skin.

Glyceryl Stearate: Made from glycerin and stearic acid (an emulsifier derived from vegetable fats), this little wonder helps skin stay hydrated throughout the day.

These ingredients sound intimidating but they support our skin in beautiful ways and keep our complexions looking fabulous. When someone asks you what makes OHA so great, you can tell them it’s made of unbleached and vibrant plant oils with skin-boosting supplements. Easy peasy.

The Super Powers of Licorice

[social_share/]

There are few foods as polarizing as licorice. I fall into the “no, thank you” camp while others happily consume it on a regular basis. The beautiful thing about licorice, besides providing the world an illustration of living peacefully amongst differing opinions, is that it comes from a plant (with the hardcore title of Glycyrrhiza glabra, but I’ll just call it ‘licorice’) with impressive super powers for your skin. Let’s review some of those here:

1. Are dark spots from acne, eczema, aging and scars bothering you? Studies show that licorice can naturally lighten pigmented skin to give it a more balanced, even look.

2. Suffer from psoriasis? Have no fear! Licorice Root Extract is here! Slather the Vitamin C Infused Hand Cream over your psoriasis-addled skin and watch it get better in no time.

3. Are you battling itchy dermatitis? In a study by the Department of Pharmaceutics, “Two percent licorice topical gel was more effective than 1% in reducing the scores for erythema, oedema and itching over two weeks. The results showed that licorice extract could be considered as an effective agent for treatment of atopic dermatitis.” Lucky for you OHA customers, Martha formulated the Vitamin C Infused Hand Cream with a 7.5 % concentration of licorice root extract to provide even more scientifically proven healing power.

4. Best of all, applying licorice root extract topically helps prevent skin cancer and consumes free radicals to slow down the skin’s natural aging process. The Department of Medical Elementology and Toxicology did a study whose results showed, “that glycyrrhetinic acid (a “major active component of licorice roots”), an antioxidant, is a potential chemopreventive agent that can inhibit… cutaneous oxidative stress and tumor promotion.”

Basically, licorice root extract is awesome. It’s a potent extract that will not only balance your skin tone and soothe what ails your skin but it also prevents future skin troubles, like skin cancer and wrinkles. Now, when you use your favorite OHA hand cream, you’ll know you’re applying the real deal.

What Vitamins Do

[social_share/]

Standing in the vitamin aisle of my local grocery store, I suddenly realized I knew next to nothing about vitamins besides that multi-vitamins help compensate for vitamins you can’t get in your diet and that vitamin C helps with the immune system, to stave off colds. My thinking about vitamins didn’t stretch much farther than that.

After some research (and talking with Martha) I found out that vitamins are organic, essential micro nutrients that your body and skin need to perform their day-to-day metabolic activities.  Take, for instance, when you get a paper cut. You’ll bleed a little until the blood clots and then, left alone, it will heal naturally, possibly leaving a little scar. Vitamins help speed up and improve this process by supporting what the skin and body are already doing. Vitamin E will help with the healing of that cut and Vitamin C will aid in collagen production, decreasing the likelihood of scarring. When your skin is supported by vitamins, it will heal quicker, scar less, and protect itself more than it could without vitamins.

When applied directly to the skin, vitamins promote healthy collagen, wound healing, UV protection in addition to healing skin conditions like acne. In most skin care brands, Vitamin C is a popular antioxidant ingredient but, because it breaks down and oxidizes quickly, the inclusion of Vitamin C is useless by the time their product reaches your bathroom cabinet. OHA uses a Vitamin C ester with the fatty acids of palm oil. Used in this way, the Vitamin C is stabilized by its fat soluable coating. This makes it available to the skin as it will be an active antioxidant and able to combine with the naturally-occuring fat soluable coating of the skin. In other words, the esterfied Vitamin C used in OHA’s skin care actually benefits the skin by being more absorbable and active than vitamin C generally used in  other skin care brands.
