Food-Grade Nutrients

Both our oils and extracts are food grade, meaning you can theoretically eat them safely or use them as supplements because they are so purely preserved.

We opt for food-grade nutrients because research has shown that natural nutrients are three (or more!) times more effective than their synthetic counterparts.

Included in nearly all of our products, a few of our most potent food-grade ingredients found in nature are the following. We include a brief overview of them here because we want you to feel informed about and empowered by the ingredients you are putting on your skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E’s primary skincare benefit is that it maintains the lipid barrier of skin, which ensures continuous healthy hydration and neutralizes the impact of harmful environmental stressors. Tocopherols and tocotrienols are members of the Vitamin E family that when combined offer maximum antioxidant benefits for skin protection, general health and anti-aging. This is particularly true when combined with vitamin C as they regenerate each other.

Tocotrienol: Tocotrienol (extracted from sustainable red palm oil) has been shown to be 40-60 times higher in antioxidant potency than tocopherol. Its topical benefits reverse or slow damage caused by exposure to free radicals, restore the lipid barrier to slow visible signs of aging and promote a youthful glow. Tocopherol: Tocopherols are structurally different from tocotrienols and more commonly found in natural oil ingredients. Our tocopherol (extracted from non-GMO sunflower seeds) protects from UV damage, pollution and helps restore skin’s lipid barrier and prevent hyperpigmentation.

Esterfied Vitamin C

This important antioxidant fortifies skin cells from damaging free radicals caused by UV exposure, air pollution and other environmental stressors. Vitamin C also inhibits melanin production, which helps address hyperpigmentation, even skin tone and enhance radiance. The Mayo Clinic conducted a study proving that topical Vitamin C enhances the quality and synthesis of collagen in skin to keep it plump and supple. The greatest effect of vitamin C is seen when it is combined with other micronutrients, such as vitamin E (discussed above).

MSM

MSM (methylsulfanylmethane) or organic sulfur extract, plays a critical role in the body’s ability to produce collagen and support the building of keratin. When used in tandem with proper cleansing, gentle exfoliation and regular moisturizing, topical MSM can make a dramatic impact on the appearance of skin. It helps smooth and tighten for reduced puffiness and fewer wrinkles so your complexion appears youthful without the need for invasive treatments. Our MSM is a local ingredient from Vancouver, WA.

Berry Seed Complex (Red Raspberry Seed, Cranberry Seed + Rosehip Seed Oils)

This trio of oils are used in many OHA products to provide a balanced symmetry of essential omega 3, 6, 7 and 9 fatty acids to ensure daily optimal absorption and efficacy on the skin.
